Cardboard is a generic term for paper products based on heavy loads, thicker and superior strength or other specific paper mechanical properties, such as flexibility, hardness and impact resistance. The design can range from a thick sheet known as paperboard to corrugated cardboard, composed of several corrugated and flat layers.

Despite the widespread use in English and French, the term "cardboard" was withdrawn from trade and industry because it does not adequately define a specific product. Material manufacturers, container manufacturers, packaging engineers and standards bodies use more specific terminology. Most types of cardboard are recyclable. Boards that are laminate, waxed, or wet-processed are often more challenging to dispose of. Blank cardboard (i.e., board that has not been chemically coated) "is usually worth rebuilding, although there is often little difference between the cost it produces and the cost of recovery is marginal". Cardboard can be recycled for industrial or household use. For example, cardboard can be collected or shredded for animal bedding.

The term has been in use since at least 1848 when Anne Brontë mentioned it in her novel The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. The Kellogg brothers first used cardboard boxes to store refined cornmeal, and later, when they introduced it to the general public, a bag of wax paper was wrapped around the outside of the box, and their stamp was printed. This development marks the origin of the cereal box, although nowadays, the sealed bag is made of plastic and stored inside the box. Kieckhefer, run by John W. Kieckhefer, was another pioneer in the early American packaging industry. It is characterized by the use of containers for transporting fibres, in particular, milk carton. Corrugated paperboard is a combination of paperboard, usually two flat liners and an internal fluorescent corrugated medium. It is often used to make corrugated boxes for transporting or storing food. This type of cardboard is also used by artists as original material for sculpting.
